Drôme Sud Provence is that part of the territory of the Drôme Provençale that you have probably already crossed without knowing it: either from the A7 motorway or the National 7.
Located between Montélimar and Avignon, less than an hour by car from the Pont du Gard, the Caverne du Pont d’Arc, and the Palais des Papes in Avignon, you are at the gateway to Provence.
Drôme Sud Provence is a group of 14 municipalities where the traces of a rich historical past stand out. We are immediately seduced by the villages typical of the south of France. Don’t miss to visit the charming perched villages of La Garde Adhémar, labelled “Plus Beaux Villages de France” and next to it the one of Clansayes, which offers a unique panoramic view of the Rhône valley.
Visit of old villages and Suze-la-Rousse castle
Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux, former fortified city, has kept some beautiful remains of ramparts. No need to look for the three castles, there are none! The name comes from a translation clumsiness: originally, the city was called Tricastinorum under the Roman Empire, then translated Tricastin and Trois Châteaux.
Before going to visit a real castle, make a hook (you will not be disappointed 😉 by authentic villages with a medieval character of Saint-Restitut and Baume-de-Transit. Direction Suze-la-Rousse, we admire it from afar on its rocky promontory, the very pretty Castle of Suze-la-Rousse, remarkably well preserved, it shelters the Wine University and a museum dedicated to the history of wine and vines !
