Commune located in the heart of the Valdaine. A dynamic, welcoming village.
Francois 1er, Emperor Barbarossa and Madame de Sévigné did the same as you. They came to this village. You can follow in their footsteps...
Description
Charols is a must. Leaving the plain to the east, you have to cross its strategic bridge over the Roubion. The village undoubtedly grew out of this proximity, first settling on a motte castrale to the south, then around a priory, Saint-Jean-Baptiste, built around the 8th century. Local tradition and texts tell us that many of the world's greats have preceded you here: Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, François I, Louis XIII and the Marquise de Sévigné on their way to Grignan. An heir to the throne of France waded across a torrent swollen by a flash flood, and his life was saved only by the intervention of a Charols peasant: it was the Dauphin, the future Louis XI, on his way to his château in Sauzet. In memory of this adventure, and to invoke the Dauphins' protection, an engraved stone bearing this date was placed at the keystone of a new bridge during the coronation of his son Charles VIII in 1484. It now hangs in the town council chamber.
