Land of history and sweets

An invitation to tread the cobblestones of the old town center, where history seems to loom large around every corner. The walk leads up to the promenade des remparts, where a magnificent view of the Rhône and the village invites contemplation.

Description

Starting point: The Parc de la Chocolaterie. If there is an event on at the Parc de la Chocolaterie, start your walk at the sports hall instead.
Leave the car park by the road and follow it to the right for a few yards. At the stop sign, turn left along Avenue Pierre de Coubertin (with a view of the château and village to the right).
Pass the swimming pool, then turn left along the Cours de la Liberté towards the leisure centre (with a view of the Ardèche). After the car park on the left, go over the pedestrian crossing in the direction of the town hall and the church. Go along the Parc Meynot, then along the right-hand side of the town hall, the Rue de la Gravière /!\ steep steps.
At the top, carry straight on and take the Promenade des Remparts. Very pretty view over the Rhône, the village and the ramparts. In front of the house, carry on to the left to see the monument to the Virgin Mary and, a little further on, the Beauvert windmill. Go past it and carry straight on along the Promenade des Remparts (fine view over the canal and the Rhône on the right).
Turn back and return along the same route. Take the left turn, go through the medieval gate and carry on along the Rue de la Double. At the end of this street, keep right and go all the way down to the Grande Rue (view of the 'Tour de l’Horloge' clock tower and the Fountain).
Now bear left, pass the Musée des Amis du Vieux Donzère (MHID) at no.30, and spot the millstones after no.23. There is a Renaissance tower on the right after the Impasse de la Daurière. Pass the gate of the Grande Rue, where there is drinking water on the left.
Come back the same way and take the Rue de la Coste immediately on the right, then carry on along the Calade Claude de Tournon (view of the château), take the first on the left at no.6 and go down the Rue Montant au Château as far as the Grande Rue again.
Just after the Tour de l’Horloge, take the first on the left - it's the Rue de l’Argentière - and go down the road, then through the fortified gate and enter the Place Henri Dunant, with the lavoir (communal laundry or wash-house) on the left. In front of you is the Champ de Mars square, where you can visit local businesses to enjoy a drink or have something to eat.
Go back through the Argentière Gate and take the first on the left /!\ it's a bit steep and low (mind your head). This street runs parallel to the Boulevard des Barrys. Take the second street on the right, and, at the Place du Fumeras, continue along the Rue de la Sacristie, back to the Grande Rue again, and turn left towards the entrance of the church, the Église Saint-Philibert.
Go down the Rue des Belles Filles, take the 2nd on the right (the Rue de l’Abbaye) and go along the Parc Meynot.
On the left, take the Cours de la Liberté for a few yards. At the roundabout, keep right for the Rue du Général de Gaulle. At the end of the street, turn left along the Chemin de la Plaine and then take the first on the left (the Rue de la Chocolaterie).
And you are back at the car park where you started.
