Rochers de Sabouillon

1

Challenging hike on mountain trails approaching Saint-Julien. The descent offers magnificent views of the region: the Sabouillon rocks, the Saint-Julien, the Ouvèze valley and Mont Ventoux.

Description

Departure: Place du Quinconce, center of Buis-les-Baronnies

1. From Place du Quinconce, head south towards the municipal campsite to cross the Ouvèze bridge. Then turn left on the Chemin de Malgras for 50m. Turn right onto Avenue Guillaume de Plaisians. The municipal swimming pool is on the right.

2. At the fork in the road, continue straight ahead on the small road which climbs following the signposts. After 50 m, continue straight on towards the Chemin du Saint-Julien. 100m further on, there's another fork in the road. Take the stony path straight ahead. You'll come to a track at the Pin d'Ais crossroads
(436m).

3. Turn left onto the flat track and follow it for 3.7 km. It then takes the name Route de l'Ubac, and becomes a tarmac road. There's a fine view of La Roche-sur-le-Buis on the left.

4. At the fork in the road, turn right into a hairpin bend and take the chemin de l'Ubac towards the ferme de la Viste. The slope rises gently uphill. Ferme de la Viste is signposted on the left. Turn right onto Route du Théron.

5. You arrive at the Théron farm. The road becomes a track. Leave the farm on your right and turn left. We pass a fence that needs to be put back in place.

6. After two bends, continue straight ahead. Pass a second fence and you come to an open space with crops. Go round the orchard to the right and then to the left. Respect the crops.

7. After the orchard, leave the track and turn left, passing a fence. This climbs upwards, taking a few bends. The path soon joins the track, which you take on the left. Turn left a second time. After 30 m, leave the track and turn right in a steep area.

8. Rejoin the track, which you take to the left. As you approach the first rocks, you pass a fourth fence.

9. 500m further on, at the fork in the road, turn left onto a flat track, which then curves upwards.

10. At altitude 1030m on the IGN, at a cairn, leave the track and take a path to the right through the woods. The slope rises.

11. You reach the Nible lawns, with their pleasant picnic spots. Turn right and follow the flat path to the "La Nible" sign (1100m). From here, turn right, following the GR9 signposts back to Buis. When you come out into the open, you can see La Roche-sur-le-Buis. The path then descends.

12. At the crossroads, turn right in a hairpin bend (GR9 signposts). You can reach Plaisians on the left. The descent becomes steeper.

13. On an open level, you come to a place called Sabouillon (844m). Leaving the "Sabouillon" post on your left, turn right onto the path marked yellow and GR9. The path descends to the right, then straight ahead.

14. At altitude 690m (Pas du Saint-Julien, not marked on IGN), on a flat area, you come to a crossroads with a cairn. Turn right. The path curves downhill.

15. After a few bends, you come to a second crossroads. On the left is the via ferrata trail. Turn right to descend towards Buis-les-Baronnies. The path becomes a track. Before an orchard, a small path on the right cuts the track for 50m.

16. We join another track, which we take to the left. After a right-hand bend, it leads back to the crossroads at Pin d'Aïs, with the via ferrata parking lot.

17. From here, following the same route as on the outward journey, reach the parking lot at Place Quinconce.
